Teasers for Spring Reviews

I just realized how badly MotorcycleWords.com has been neglected by me over the past couple of months. Seeing as the weather has been less than “motorcycle-friendly” in my part of the country it is likely not surprising. Still, that’s no excuse for the emptiness and quiet that has descended on my humble little blog. So to get things warmed back up I thought I’d share some info on upcoming products I have in for review for webBikeWorld.com as well as some teasers for things on the way.

First up, I have one of the new Elipsol Air jackets from Pilot Motosport in house for review. This addition to Pilot’s lineup is a mashup of adventure styling and mesh airflow. I really like the styling of this jacket and in addition to light grey, dark grey, and Hi-Viz colors, they have a new “Sand” color which I totally dig. I’ve managed two short rides with it during the brief periods when it was warm enough but Spring is on the way and this review will be hitting wBW soon.

Sitting on the shelf waiting for warmer temps is a pair of riding jeans from Trilobite out of the Czech Republic. Their TON-UP riding jeans take a different approach than other riding jeans I’ve reviewed in the past as they do not have a separate lining for abrasion resistance. Instead, the denim used in the jeans is made from UHMWPE (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) thread making it not only very durable but also much lighter than typical motorcycle specific jeans. The material is also very cool against the skin so I’ve been patiently waiting for Spring to show up so I can give these a full test.

Finally, after about 6,500 miles on my Continental Road Attack 2 EVO’s, I’ll be replacing them soon with a set of Continental’s new Road Attack 3‘s so I’ll be posting up an initial review soon as well as a “post-mortem” on the EVO’s. (Hint, the EVO’s were fantastic)

In news not related to my wBW reviews, I’ve got a more installments of my “Risky Business” series of riding skills articles coming for 2018. I also am looking forward to announcing a new riding skills course that will (hopefully) be available later this year from a highly skilled motorcycle riding coach/instructor I’m lucky to be friends with. I’ll be posting up news about that as it gets closer to launch. If this is something you might be interested in attending please let em know so I can let you know when this is available.

MotoPumps Airshot Review – wBW

My latest review, the MotoPumps Airshot inflator, is published today on webBikeWorld.com. The Airshot is one of the smallest portable air compressors you can get. Running off of 12 volts and drawing less than 5A (4.7 I believe), this little device is able to fit in most underseat storage for street bikes as well as small tank bags and other luggage.

Capable of 100psi, this little inflator can even bring tubliss tubes (or non-tubes I guess) up to full pressure. The Airshot comes with power connectors to fit most any 12volt source you have. If you want to have peace of mind on the street and/or the trail, this little guy is worth checking out.

Continental Eyeing Russian Dandelions

So at first glance that phrase the title of this article doesn’t make much sense but bear with me. It turns out that Continental Tires has been looking at finding a substitute for traditional rubber that grows on (OK, in) trees. You might be thinking that modern tires for motorcycles, cars, trucks, etc. are made from synthetics but the natural rubber content in some tires is as high as one-third of the overall rubber material.

Rubber trees grow in relatively narrow ranges of climate and those areas on our little planet are easily affected by the increasing threat of climate change in both the temperature kind as well as the geo-political kind of climate. Recently Continental tested a type of latex that comes from the Russian Dandelion plant and the results appear to be very promising. Continental Road Attack 2 EVO Review

My latest review for webBikeWorld.com of the Continental Road Attack 2 EVO tires.

Contintental’s Road Attack family of tires are the sport-touring street-focused sibling of the “Hypersport” tire series known by the “Sport Attack” label. The Continental Road Attack 2 EVO tires were first released in 2013 and the Continental representatives told me that I should really try the the Road Attack 2 EVO tires for comparison.

They said that a lot of the technology that went into the new Sport Attack 3 tires actually came from the Road Attack 2 EVO tires and if I liked the former, then I should be very pleased with the latter, especially in the “real world” of street use.

Of course, I had to find out!

Shooting tires, With a Camera of Course

Just wanted to post a little behind the scenes action for an upcoming tire review. Let’s face it, photos of tires can be boring, but they don’t have to be. Here’s a few shots and a “behind the scenes” photo demonstrating how glamorous shooting tire photos can be.

I not only wanted to create a bit more drama than the typical “here’s the tread” and “here’s the sidewall” photos so time to rethink the “Tire” photo. One way to add drama to in image is to tighten up your shot on just certain features, like this shot at the right.

Road Attack 2 Evo Review Coming Soon

After putting about 1600 miles on the Ninja 1000, I am pleased to have received a new set of Continental Road Attack 2 Evo tires to replace the Bridgestone BT-016 OEM hoops from the factory. I have ridden on Continental motorcycle tires in the past including the Road Attacks, Road Attack 2’s, as well as the second and third generations of the Sport Attack series.

At the Sport Attack 3 press launch earlier this year, I was asking the Continental crew when we might see a a Road Attack that uses some of the new technology in the Sport Attack 3. They suggested I try out the Road Attack 2 Evo’s as there was a lot of that tech from that tire that went into the “Sports”. This past weekend we removed the OEM Bridgestones from the Ninja and the RA 2 Evo’s were set on the rims.

The Ninja 1000 has a lot of things going for it and I generally have been pleased with the bike but the handling has been a bit “nervous” from the outset. I am hoping that the change to these Continental hoops will improve this situation.

Continental Sport Attack 3 Hypersport Tires

I recently was asked to attend a press launch of Continental Tires new Sport Attack 3 tires on behalf of webBikeWorld. I immediately jumped on the chance to do this and arrived in Uvalde, TX on the evening of Sunday, March 20th. The next day I, and several other journalists, would head to the Continental Tire proving grounds for some time on the track(s) with these new tires.
