Introduction

Beating the Summer heat for the motorcycle rider is always a challenge. Protective gear can be stifling in the hot and humid Summers here in the Southeastern United States. Earlier this year I reviewed the Orsa  Leather MkII gloves from Knox that I have put to use for hot weather riding since 2017. Those gloves are very protective and look the part for sport riding gloves.

Always being interested in what the next new thing might be I started looking for a new pair of gloves for 2018. Back in 2017, REV’IT released an update to the Sand Pro gloves, the Sand 3. The description ticked all the right boxes and they were available in a smart looking brown color. Certainly the color won’t affect comfort or protection but they do look cool (in my opinion).

Let’s dig into the details.

The Rev’It Sand 3 Glove

The Sand 3 gloves take up the torch from the Sand Pro gloves as their mid-range off-road/street hybrid glove. These are a worthy successor to that popular glove and it ups the ante in protective features and the looks are nicely updated as well.

The Sand 3’s are available in four colors including black, black/silver, black/silver/red, and of course, sand. Sand being unique from the other colors as the leather for the palm and underside of the fingers is brown. It gives this colorway a distinctive look from the other black based designs but obviously does not offer as much visibility as the color choices that incorporate silver.

In the sand colorway brown accents are also found on the back of the hand in a diagonal strip of fabric as well as on small accordion stretch panels on the top first three fingers The diagonal strip has the REV’IT logo in it while the short gauntlet has the three-sided REV’IT graphic sitting on top of a three sided piece of TPU.

One of the unique stylistic and functional features of the Sand 3 gloves is the flexible TPU material used for impact protection in various places on these gloves. These protectors are made up of a matrix of hexagonal shapes in a similar fashion to REV’IT’s SeeSmart armor. This armor gives the gloves an uncommon look and combines good protection with good flexibility.

The Sand 3 gloves also offer a simple, but very welcome, feature in the form of a large red loop of fabric and the cuff opening. The heavy duty 1/2 inch (13mm) strap makes pulling these gloves on much easier. This strap provides good leverage and prevents wear on the cuff that would result from the repeated grasping and tugging required to put them on.

One last thing to note is that the tips of the forefinger and thumbs employ REV’IT’s Connect material for use with capacitive touch screen devices. Having been placed on both of those digits makes it easy to zoom on mobile devices which is very handy for using map applications.

EVS SportsR4K Race Collar Review

Product: R4K Race Collar
Manufacturer: EVS Sports
Sizes: Adult and Youth
Color(s): Black/Red and White/Green
MSRP: $199.00

Introduction

There are riders that subscribe to ATGATT (all the gear, all the time) and those that don’t. How much protective riding gear one wears and how often it gets worn ends up being a matter of risk management. Barring helmet laws, protective riding gear is not compulsory so the range of protection observed on street motorcycle riders tends to vary widely.

I am an ATGATT rider and lately I would say I’ve become an ATGATT+ rider. I consider “All the Gear” for the street to include riding boots, pants, jacket, helmet, and gloves that all contain armor as applicable.

Recently I added an additional piece of kit to my normal riding gear, a neck brace/collar.The following details my experience so far using the R4K Race Collar as an daily use piece of protective street riding gear.

I want to point out that EVS does not specifically market or recommend this product for street riding use. In the past I have taken other off-road safety equipment such as knee/shin protectors and used them to augment my street riding safety gear.

REV’IT! Enterprise 2 Pants Review

Carmen and I review the Enterprise 2 textile pants from REVT’IT.

Excerpt below:

REV’IT! has updated the original Enterprise pants with this new Enterprise version 2 and the changes are significant. To start with, the original Enterprise pants had a full-length leg zipper that ran on the inside of the legs. This of course made it easy to put the pants on or take them off while still wearing your footwear.

The Enterprise 2 pants instead offers a gusset-backed zipper that runs from below the knee down to the leg opening. This makes it easier to put the boots on and fasten them, but the opening isn’t large enough to slip booted feet through the legs. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, because one of the reasons for the change is that the shell is no longer the waterproof layer.

The Enterprise 2 pants use a waterproof breathable liner that is permanently attached to the inside. This makes the long zippered leg of the original Enterprise pants impractical, as it would compromise the water resistance of the garment. Maybe issues with waterproofing could be the reason for this change from the previous version?

More differences are present in this second version of the Enterprise pants and I’ll identify these features as the review continues. As in our Outback 2 jacket review, I will also note differences between the women’s and men’s version. Don’t expect a lot, however, because the differences between the men’s and women’s versions of the Enterprise 2 pants are not as apparent as they were in the jackets.

REV’IT Outback 2 Jacket Review (men’s and women’s)

revit-outback-2-jacket-womensCarmen and I teamed up recently for a look at the REV’IT Outback 2 jacket for webBikeWorld. The Outback 2 jacket blurs the line a bit between an adventure jacket, touring jacket, and sport riding jacket. It might be the perfect jacket for the daily commuter offering plenty of storage, multiple liners, and quality construction.

In this review Carmen and I look at both the women’s and men’s versions of the Outback 2 jacket.  While the overall design and function is quite similar, there are some differences we call out during the review. From the review…

revit-outback-2-jacket-mensThe Outback 2 jacket is the REV’IT! mid-level entry in their adventure jacket lineup, but I would really classify this jacket as more of an Adventure/Sport if such a category exists.

Why? Well let’s begin with the styling.

An initial glance at the Outback 2 immediately says “adventure” jacket with the multiple pockets, the high(er) collar, and long(er) waist.
